(I Believe)

I believe in the sun
Even when it is not shining.

I believe in love
Even when feeling it not.

I believe in God
Even when God is silent.

This text was found by Allied troops in 1945. It was written on the wall of a basement in Cologne, Germany, presumably by someone hiding from the Gestapo. In its simplicity, it is a profound statement of faith in the midst of adversity.

BUD BOY!

When they came for the Communists, I did not stand up, because I was not a Communist. When they came for the Jews, I did not stand up, because I was not Jewish. When they came for the Catholics, I did not stand up, because I was not a Catholic. When they came for me, there was no one left to stand up.

If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end: If you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth - only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin with and, in the end, despair.

And once we have the condition of peace and joy in us, we can afford to be in any situation. Even in the situation of hell, we will be able to contribute our peace and serenity. The most important thing is for each of us to have some freedom in our heart, some stability in our heart, some peace in our heart. Only then will we be able to relieve the suffering around us.

Thich Nhat Hanh
